Welcome Coach Kelly Rushing

Athletic Director and Head Football Coach

Head of School Felicia Jones announced Friday, Jan. 11, that Coach Kelly Rushing had been named Athletic Director and Head Football Coach.

Coach Rushing holds an Ed.S in Educational Administration and a Bachelor's Degree in PE and History.  He is currently the assistant principal, which includes some athletic director duties, assistant football coach, and head softball coach at Winston County High School.  Coach Rushing has 27 years of experience in athletics, and 24 coaching football.  In addition to coaching football and softball, he has also coached basketball, track, baseball, and volleyball.  In 2018, Coach Rushing was inducted in the Winston County Hall of Fame for his coaching success.

He is married to Michelle Rushing, a science teacher at Haleyville Middle School. They have two sons: Dakota (age 23) is a recent graduate of West Alabama where he started at defensive end on the football team and is currently interning there as a strength and conditioning coach; Brock (age 11) is a Haleyville elementary student who participates in football, basketball, and baseball.  Brock will attend SCS next year.

Once at SCS Coach Rushing says his first order of business is to develop a relationship with the students.  “Stability,” he says, “is what has been missing at Shoals Christian School for a while, and without that, a program is not sustainable.” Coach Rushing says it is vital that he, as the Athletic Director, has a presence in the school and is visible in all sports.  He emphasizes that boys’ and girls’ athletics are equally important for the success of a healthy athletic program and that a clearly defined weight lifting program required of all athletes is critical.  Coach Rushing is dedicated to helping our athletes learn to compete and is also dedicated to helping build up our young leaders of tomorrow. Coach Rushing says, "I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and it is the blueprint for instruction on how I not only live my life but also how I lead as a coach and an administrator.”

Coach Rushing says, “This is a dream come true for me. I am looking forward to seeing the Bible and prayer back in the classroom. I want to thank Mrs. Felicia Jones and the selection committee for the confidence they are bestowing on me as I enter this new phase of my career.  I look forward to meeting everyone and having positive working relationships with administration, faculty, staff, coaches, students, and athletes.”

Coach Rushing will start full-time March 1, but expect him to be on campus as often as possible in the interim.

A Word about SCS Athletics

The athletic program at SCS is a key component of a student athlete's spiritual development. Our coaches are seen as mentors and are dedicated to modeling Christ-like behavior to our athletes. Student/ athletes strive for excellence, but do this in the spirit of fair play. Our goals are to compete at the highest levels possible and be champions, but to more importantly exemplify Christ's character to everyone who sees us. Representing SCS on the field of play is a privilege and with it comes the responsibility of demonstrating Christ-like behavior. Student-athletes should be taught to face adversity and the challenge of competition, while playing for our audience of one - who is Jesus Christ. Our ultimate goals are to strive to be champions, but more importantly champions for Christ.
